Wow is all I can say after reading last weeks article “Acts of Resistance”. I guess I didn’t really realize how prevalent slavery was in Canada. At all. Which probably sounds pretty stupid but Canada has really romanticized the underground railroad and how helpful we were when in fact, our country was just as brutal as the next. Clearly we learned quickly and changed things around but I am still astonished that any of it took place here at all. I like to find silver linings in almost everything so I have to point out the positives; It is nice to see people stick up for the underdog. That’s what I think should really shine. Martin and Simcoe put themselves on the line to fight for the rights of others, which I think is a heroic act, especially in a times when that was frowned upon. I think we not only need to take away that our country wasn’t always the greatest morally, but we need to recognize that someone(s) saw people who needed help and didn’t stop until they succeeded.
